Challenge — Karunyam, a palliative care organisation serving 3,150+ patients across Kozhikode, had no digital presence that matched the depth of its work. Donors couldn't easily give, volunteers had no way to join, and families in need couldn't easily find help.
Strategy — Design a website that leads with human impact, builds trust through transparency, and removes every barrier between the visitor and the action they came to take: donate, volunteer, or seek care.
Result — A warm, structured, accessible web presence that communicates 18 years of community care with clarity and compassion.
The Problem
Charitable organisations like Karunyam serve visitors with very different needs, familiarity, and emotional states — all through a single website. Four core problems needed solving:
Donors couldn't act quickly. No prominent donation path, and trust signals like impact numbers and fund transparency were buried or missing.
Families couldn't find clarity. Patients and caregivers, often arriving in distress, faced medical jargon and unclear structure when they needed simple answers fast.
Volunteers had no entry point. The organisation depends on community participation, but the site gave no clear way to start.
18 years of credibility was invisible. Karunyam's history, infrastructure, and endorsements from doctors and community leaders weren't being communicated anywhere.
Understanding the Users
Three distinct groups visit the site, each with a different job to be done:
Donors (local and diaspora) — many based in Qatar and Bahrain through Karunyam's Gulf chapters. Already willing to give; the site's job is to make giving fast, trustworthy, and emotionally resonant.
Patients and families — often arriving in crisis. They need to know instantly what care is available and how to reach someone. Complexity is a barrier they don't have capacity for.
Volunteers and community members — want a clear, low-friction way to offer time, with no ambiguity about what's involved.
Strategy
Lead with Impact
Visitors connect with outcomes before organisations. The homepage highlights real impact through key statistics, helping build trust before introducing Karunyam's mission.
Make Giving Effortless
Donation is treated as the primary action. Clear CTAs and a streamlined donation flow reduce friction while reinforcing the real-world impact of every contribution.
Design Around People
Services are organised around users' needs, using clear, accessible language so families can quickly understand the support available without medical jargon.
Build Trust Through Authenticity
Testimonials from healthcare professionals, community leaders, and beneficiaries provide credible social proof, strengthening trust through real voices rather than promotional claims.
Reflect Care Through Design
A calm visual language, thoughtful typography, and warm colour palette create an experience that communicates compassion, dignity, and hope—capturing Karunyam's philosophy of "Care Beyond Cure."

Impact
A website for a palliative care organisation carries a different weight than a commercial project. The person searching at 11pm for help for a parent with cancer, the NRI in Qatar wanting to give back to his hometown, the volunteer looking for meaningful work — each deserves a digital experience that meets them with clarity and warmth.
The Karunyam website gives the organisation a digital presence worthy of its work — making it easier to give, easier to find help, and easier to understand why this community institution has earned 18 years of trust.
Key Learnings
Trust is the primary design problem for non-profits. Before a visitor donates, volunteers, or seeks care, they need to trust the organisation — every decision on the site served that goal.
Emotional context shapes every UX decision. A family member in crisis reads a page differently than a donor in a comfortable moment. Designing for the harder context first improves the experience for everyone.
Simplicity is an act of care. For users navigating a difficult life situation, a clear service page isn't a design nicety — it's a real reduction of burden.
History is an asset, not an archive. Eighteen years of documented work is Karunyam's strongest argument for trust — making that history legible was one of the site's most important jobs.
The tagline does real work. "Care Beyond Cure" captures the organisation's entire philosophy in four words, shaping how every subsequent page is read.
